Hi saffron lovers. We have a shipment of Sargol (3rd one so far) coming next week from Iran crop 2009-2010. Color around 297, just superb quality. Saffron prices are coming down a bit but will go up again after the Iranian New Year. Iran's small crop of 08-09 of 40,000 kg was due to a dry summer and a brutal cold winter, as a result the corms did not bloom. The crop of 09-2010 was around 140,000 kg so there is some relief in availibility and price. Spanish crop was around 900 kg so the "Spanish exporters" will keep doing their usual cheating: cut, mix and tint so dont buy their garbage. Remember to check www.saffron.com for the latest price.

LOL, say Juan, don't tell so many people about your wholesale pricing, we may never shop for saffron OR vanilla anywhere else again!
I've just gotten back into cooking after 30+ years on and then off the clock. Last year, my family sold our Mexican restaurant, and just in the nick of time. I'm interested in country French, Recently, this has necessitated a return to making yellow rice. One stated method calls for soaking the saffron for a few minutes in boliing water, and continuing the rice from there. Needless to say, the $11.49 Kroger -brand is lousy, forcing me to be too sparing, and thus resulting in pale, less tasty rice.
Obviously you cannot be beaten in the USA, for price & value. I might add, it is refreshing to meet someone with old world values as well. I will order both of your specialty items in due course, as I ramp-up to the next higher level of food production.
